Heh (Fifth Grade) - Curriculum
Components of Heh include the following:
- Prayer Tefillah
- Students will master the foundations of the prayers that will make it possible to feel lead, participate, and feel comfortable in the P'sukei D'zimra, Shacharit, Mincha, Ma’ariv, Musaf, and Kabbalat Shabbat services. Every Wednesday afternoon, Heh students join with the Gimel and Dalet classes in prayer. Among the highlights of the year are the many opportunities students have to lead services: Kabbalat Shabbat and Ma’ariv on a chosen Friday night; and portions of P’sukei D’zimra, Shacharit, and Musaf as part of the once-a-month Shabbat Morning Family Programming Tefillat HaMishpacha in the Sanctuary.
- Torah and Hebrew Bible TaNaCH / Chanting
- Students will interpret the weekly Torah portions and reflect upon their narratives through creative, interactive means. Students will experiment with new Jewish websites, SMARTBoard technology, laptops, iPads, and wikis. In addition, students will compare and contrast figures from Torah portions with their counterparts in the Haftarot (from the Prophets) and in the Writings (corresponding with the holidays). In addition, students will discover new interpretations of Torah on Shabbat mornings with Rabbi Newman Kamin as part of the Shabbat Morning Family Programming Tefillat HaMishpacha.
- Israel
- Students will learn the building of a nation from the beginning of monotheism to the creation of a modern country with an identity, language, laws, symbols, and government. Students will participate in an interactive historical study of Israel from the time it was called Canaan and our leader was Abraham, to the creation of the modern State of Israel and beyond.
- Hebrew Ivrit
- In addition to continuing to develop their Hebrew skills by mastering prayers, the Heh class will use them to retell Jewish history through a Hebrew presentation entitled Sikkum Historia Yehudit, a summary of what they learn throughout the year. This presentation will incorporate several Hebrew and Israeli songs and a full-year art project.
- Jewish Literacy and Holidays
- Students will learn about the origins of each holiday (biblical, rabbinic, and modern).
- Art Class
- Students will take part in a year-long art project with Ms. Michelle Drucker and Ms. Sheila Serota that will be presented at Sikkum Historia Yehudit.
- Music Class
- Students will learn new Hebrew and Israeli songs with Ms. Natasha Bodansky and Madrich Ryan Hochman that will be presented at Sikkum Historia Yehudit.
