Bet (Second Grade) - Curriculum
Components of Bet include the following:
- Prayer Tefillah
- Students will develop the ability to sing prayers and summarize their meanings.
- Torah and Hebrew Bible TaNaCH
- Students will analyze some of the following figures: God, Adam, Eve, Cain, Abel, Noah, Na’ama, Shem, Cham, Yafet, Terach, Abraham, Sarah, Lot, Isaac, Rebecca, Eliezer, Laban, Jacob, Rachel, Leah, Joseph, Joseph’s brothers, Moses, Miriam, Aaron, and the Pharaoh.
- Torah Themes
- Students will reflect upon the following themes that appear in the Torah: speaking up for what is right, following one’s beliefs, overcoming challenges, avoiding gossip, telling the truth kehillah, and being kind to animals.
- Israel
- Students will learn to identify Israel as the Jewish homeland, develop pride in and connection to Israel, learn about three major cities in Israel (Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and Haifa), learn to find Israel on a world map, describe the Western Wall Kotel, and learn to identify Israeli currency shekalim.
- Holidays and Traditions
- Students will explore holiday traditions in more depth, going beyond the act of celebration to learn the meaning behind the traditions. Students focus on havdalah, including creating a havdalah set and bringing it to the Rabbi’s home to conduct the ceremony.
- Jewish Literacy
- Students will learn the names of the five books of the Torah in Hebrew and English.
- Hebrew Ivrit
- Students will become familiar with recurring words from prayers, learn everyday vocabulary, and continue learning to read Hebrew phonetically.
- Music Class
- Students will learn the havdalah blessings and various other songs for holidays and Israeli songs that connect to the curriculum with specialist teacher Ms. Natasha Bodansky and Madrich Ryan Hochman.
- Art Class
- Students will create projects that connect to the curriculum with Ms. Michelle Drucker and Ms. Sheila Serota.
