Aleph (First Grade) - Curriculum
Components of Aleph include the following:
- Prayer Tefillah
- Students will develop the ability to sing prayers and summarize their meanings.
- Torah and Hebrew Bible TaNaCH
- Students will analyze some of the following figures: God, Adam, Eve, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebecca, Laban, Jacob, Rachel, Leah, Joseph, Joseph’s brothers, Moses, Miriam, Vashti, and Esther.
- Torah Themes
- Students will learn about the following themes that appear in the Torah: welcoming guests, the Ten Commandments, jealousy, pride in oneself, leadership, hope, overcoming fears, and human imperfection.
- Israel
- Students will explore the following areas of Israeli life: food, culture, music, the army, and children’s life and games. Students will study the geography and language of Israel and some important Israeli places.
- Hebrew Ivrit
- Students will learn conversational Hebrew and phonetic reading skills from Ms. Elana Michael.
- Jewish Calendar
- Students will learn their Hebrew birthdates.
- Holidays
- Students will discover how we celebrate Jewish traditions and customs, such as lighting Shabbat candles, celebrating as a family, and repenting on Yom Kippur.
- Music Class
- Students will sing Jewish songs with specialist teacher Ms. Natasha Bodansky and Madrich Ryan Hochman.
- Art Class
- Ms. Michelle Drucker and Ms. Sheila Serota will lead students in creating projects such as kiddush cups, mezuzot, seder plates, afikoman covers, pillow for the seder, baskets for mishloach manot, chanukiot, dreidels, graggers, a depiction of the whale eating Jonah, “Ten Plague gloves” depictions of the seder service on frogs, sand art for holidays, Israeli flags, and depictions of Joseph’s dreams.
